The Long Night Moon

Humans have been naming the phases of the moon since there were people. Even before the Native Americans assigned names and meanings to the full moons, the Celtics did it as did the ancient Chinese.
The last full moon of 2012 began last night (Thursday 12/27/12) and peaked at 5:21 am this morning, but it will still be visible tonight. Last night and again tonight, the full moon will follow the sun’s path, rising around sunset and setting around sunrise on Saturday. Around midnight, the moon will be in a similar position as the sun during the summer solstice.

In areas where the sky is clear, the moon will be visible from dusk until dawn all over the world. It will be a full moon on a long night in the Northern Hemisphere and will ride low in the sky like the sun in winter in the Southern Hemisphere. North and South of the Arctic Circle where the sun stays below the horizon or there is no sun at all, the moon will mimic the position of the summer sun, hovering just above or below the horizon.

NThe December full moon shines in the center of a star formation known as the Winter Circle, a promise of where the sun will reside six months from now—a promise of longer days and warmer temperatures—a moon for wishes and dreams.

Each year, the Winter Circle is visible around the time of the Winter solstice. But this year, Jupiter is also visible near the star circle. It should be visible near the lower left of the full moon. It will be brighter than Sirius, the brightest star of the nighttime sky.

Throughout the Northern Hemisphere, this is the closest full moon to the December solstice, the longest night of the year. The Native Americans who lived in the United States named the recurring full moons to keep track of the seasons. Colonial Americans called December’s full moon The Christmas Moon while others followed Native American customs, calling it the Full Cold Moon or more commonly, the Long Night Moon.

The Long Night Moon was so named because it falls soon after the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year. It was a great night to attack the enemy. And if you believe in the supernatural, a great night for werewolves, shape shifters, and vampires.

The Long Night Moon shines longer than any other full Moon of the year, brightening the sky as clearly as the sun for those with supernatural vision. And the further north one lives in the Northern Hemisphere, the more dramatic  the moon will be. In some areas, there will be three hours and 45 minutes more moonlight than sunlight. So beware! It will be a perfect evening for creatures of the night.

Hectic and Surprising Holidays

The holidays are such a busy time of year. For me, this year is especially hectic. My self-pubbed book, Helpless Hearts was just released in October, and I’m finding it harder to promote than the books I’ve published with The Wild Rose Press. I don’t have a “support group” with my self-published title.

About the same time Helpless Hearts came out, my youngest daughter, Lauren, moved into her own apartment. There was the move and then the clean up of her old room following the move. I was working on those edits when my youngest daughter elected me to have Thanksgiving at my house.

I wasn’t all that keen on the idea. I had a book to promote, another to edit, and I wanted to get the house decorated for Christmas before my oldest daughter and her soldier husband came home for the holidays.

Mike’s in the army and stationed in Germany. He and  Jennifer haven’t been home for Christmas since 2008. And Jennifer hasn’t been home for Thanksgiving since 2005. Jennifer told me they were flying home just before Christmas. And Lauren’s room was still purple. So, after Lauren drafted me to host Thanksgiving, she got her boyfriend to paint her old bedroom.

It’s now a soothing color called “beach.”

Lauren even promised to come over to help clean the morning before or family Thanksgiving luncheon, but she overslept…or so she said.

No problem. I got the house cleaned, got the food cooked, and was ready for my guests when Lauren called to say she was running late–not at all unusual for my youngest. She’s always running late.

The rest of my family arrived on time and were sitting in the living room talking when I saw Lauren’s car pull up in the front yard. I figured the driveway was too packed for her to park in her usual place. So,I went to the front door to open it before she knocked. I figured she’d have her hands full with the food she was bringing for our Thanksgiving feast. But when I opened the door, I found my oldest daughter, Jennifer. The daughter who was supposed to still be in Germany until December 23.

Lauren had been hiding her away in her apartment for three days.

But now Thanksgiving is over and Jen is still here. I love having her, and her husband will be joining us a couple of days before Christmas. But visiting with her put me behind on my edits. Which, I finally completed late last night. Now, I’m patiently waiting for the art department to create the cover for Embrace the Darkness. And I’m trying to get ready for Christmas.

Then there’s the day job. I work as a mammographer in a local hospital and everyone wants to get everything done before the end of the year when their deductibles start over. So, I’ve worked late almost every night since Jennifer’s been home.

Life is hectic right now. And expensive. Besides holiday shopping, I had to spend over $500 on my car when it stranded us at a gas station as we were heading home from visiting my husband’s family for Thanksgiving. Luckily, I have towing on my insurance policy and Lauren’s boyfriend had driven separately so he could go to a race after church. The race was just a 1/2 hour drive from where my car stranded us. So, we didn’t have to wait long to get rescued and we had bathrooms and coffee. Everything I needed for a cold November night stuck in a car with my husband and 2 grown daughters. We even played Monopoly on Jennifer’s I-phone while we waited.

And now, the plumber is at my house, fixing a leak under my sink. There goes another couple hundred bucks! But I don’t want to get so caught up with money, or the lack there of, that I can’t give people meaningful gifts–even if I have to spend a little less this year. And I don’t want to get so caught up in making holiday plans that I forget to enjoy the season.

Christmas shouldn’t be so stressful. Hectic yes. Stressful, no. So I just need to slow down, take time to smell the Christmas tree (even if it is fake!) and enjoy my daughters’ company. Life is too short. And Christmas 2013 will be here before you know it…unless the Mayans are right and the world ends on 12/21/12.

Then, none of us will be here for this Christmas. So, why am I even stressing? Time to enjoy the most hectic, chaotic, wonderful time of the year.

A Ghostly Tale from Kathryn Knight

My guest this week is sister TWRP author Kathryn Knight. When she asked what I wanted her to blog about, I asked if she had a blog post that would make a great Halloween story. Her reply curled my toes.

Not only is the following a true story, but it took place at the farm Stephen King used for his vampire novel Salem’s Lot. And Kathryn knows the family who owns the farm. Can’t get any spookier than that. So, I’m just going to turn my blog over to Kathryn and enjoy this chilling story.

True ghost stories are particularly eerie.  While I write about ghosts, I’ve never actually seen one.  However, our good friends have had quite a history with a ghost they call Granny Griffin.  Granny Griffin happens to reside on the farm Stephen King depicts in his novel Salem’s Lot, although he changed the name in the book to Griffen farm.  The farm is located in the Maine town of Durham, where King grew up.  His best friend, Randy, lived on the 200-acre dairy farm, which dates back to the 1860’s.

In the early 1970’s, Carlene Griffin was unable to care for the farm and had to walk away from it.  My friend’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W., bought it, with all its furniture, treasures, and apparent ghosts.  As a child, my friend found photos from the Civil War while exploring the attic!  The first news of the ghost came when Mrs. W was approached by a medium in town, who insisted she had a message from the other side that needed to be delivered.  The medium wrote a note from Granny Griffin to her daughter Carlene, telling her not to worry about the fight they’d had before she died.  Mrs. W. was charged with delivering the note to Carlene, who was still living on the property in a renovated hen house.

My friend saw the ghost of Granny Griffin on several occasions, the first being one night when he was about 13.  A figure appeared in the doorway of his bedroom, wearing a long house coat.  He assumed it was his mother, but when he asked what she wanted, she did not answer.  As she turned away, her gray bun was clearly visible.  In the morning, Mrs. W. denied checking up on her son during the night—and he realized he had never, ever seen her wear her hair in a bun.

The father, Mr. W., remained skeptical.  Until the night he heard footsteps and rose to check the house.  He saw someone descending the stairs and followed the figure down the steps and into the kitchen, where she disappeared.  When he returned to the bedroom, Mrs. W awoke to ask what was wrong.  Mr. W. replied, “We’ll talk about it in the morning.  But let’s just say I believe you now.”

            “I saw…a figure.  A figure with dark hair, and I think it was Brandy.”  She shuddered and put her forehead back on his chest.

Reluctantly, he moved their bodies apart a bit and scanned her face.  He held on to her shoulders and asked calmly, “You saw Brandy?  Brandy is here?”

            She shook her head.  “No, I saw… like… an image of Brandy.  I woke up, because it was cold, and I saw something moving.  It was Brandy, I’m sure of it, although I didn’t see her face clearly.  And then she, um, disappeared.”

            “An image of Brandy?  Are you saying you saw a ghost, Rain?”  He was pretty sure she’d had another nightmare, but the way she had flown out of her room gave him the impression it had been an extremely vivid one.

            “I know, it sounds ridiculous.  But that’s what I saw.  And she sort of, well, went through the wall.  I’m sure you don’t believe me,” she added miserably, lifting her stormy eyes to his.

            He pulled her back into a hug before he could stop himself.  “I absolutely believe you.  Whether you were awake or asleep, you saw Brandy and that’s scary.  I don’t think we can deny that weird things are happening here.”

            Jason smoothed her hair and waited patiently for her trembling to subside.  If a ghost really was lurking in her bedroom, there wasn’t a whole heck of a lot he could do about that.  A rare sense of powerlessness caused his jaw to clench in frustration.

He stopped watching the door and instead focused on the gorgeous woman in his arms.  She clung to him, and his body responded to hers with a familiar ache.  He knew he was losing the battle to keep his feelings platonic.

Holidays. The thought of a holiday dinner just conjures up pictures of steaming, aromatic dishes of food, happy music, the sounds of voices of all ages, and family. You know, all those family games and shared memories and chestnuts roasting on the open fire? Or maybe it’s more a gathering of nuts, period.

A whole group of family. Yes. What a perfect time to introduce your new “friend’ to a whole bunch of strangers at once! Who would put someone through such torture?

Nick Sansone, a Pittsburgh police lieutenant, is a friendly guy, but when the woman he’s after, attorney Suzanne Taylor, invites him to “meet the parents” at Thanksgiving dinner (at her persistent parent’s insistence), his heart has to stumble a little. But his own mother passed away several years before, and his retired cop father is just as happy with a turkey TV dinner. He’s about out of excuses.

Even worse, Suzanne’s father and two teenaged daughters are avid Steelers fans—and he roots for the Dolphins.

EXCERPT FROM THE FATEFUL THANKSGIVING DINNER:

      “He’s nice looking, your lieutenant,” Maureen said, a twinkle in her eye as she poured them both a cup of coffee and set out the cream. “So tall.”
            “Yes, he certainly is.” Suzanne read her mother’s face, seeing only approval. “Just what the fortune teller ordered.” Tall, dark and handsome, wasn’t that the usual lingo?
            “You went to a fortune teller?” Maureen gasped.
            “No, Mom. I didn’t go to a fortune teller.” Suzanne laughed. “I’m teasing you. I told you Nick was a nice guy. He’s very thoughtful. Believe me, he wants to look out for us in every sense of the words. It’s his job, you know.”
            “That’s good.  You know I worry about you, Suzie. I know you’re one of these new liberated women who can take care of yourself and handle everything.” Her dark eyes searched Suzanne’s face, emotion intensifying as she continued. “Last year, when I almost lost your father, I learned that we all need to love and be loved. Facing the prospect of being alone scares me to death. You’re human, too. Your children love you, but not in the way each adult person needs, love, support, understanding. No man is an island—and no woman, either.”
            Silence hung for a few seconds in the kitchen, then Suzanne’s phone buzzed in her pocket. She took it out to look at it. A text message from her client Maddie. “Excuse me a minute, Mom.”
            She selected the message. He’s taken Katie!
            Irritation prickling through her skin, Suzanne apologized with her eyes and stepped into the pantry for some privacy, dialing Maddie’s number. When she answered, Suzanne said, “When did he take her?”
            “She must have slipped out this morning. I thought she was studying in her room, but she’s gone.”         Maddie’s voice cracked with the effort of holding back tears.
            “Did you call the police?”
            “Not yet. I called you first. I don’t believe he’s doing this! He knows the children are the only thing I care about.” The sobs tore loose, and Suzanne heard a loud clunk, as if the phone had been dropped, then anxious voices.
            “Maddie?” A growl of frustration escaped her. If Greg had broken into the house, someone should call the police. Do something.  “Maddie?”
            A moment later a scrabbling noise on the other end of the phone and then a relieved Maddie. “She’s here. She’s back. Joshua took her for a walk, but she told him she wasn’t going to Greg’s.” The hint of a smile in her voice. “I’m so sorry for disturbing your holiday. I promise I won’t call again.”
            “Don’t be silly. If you call, I’ll be there for you, Maddie.  That’s what I’m here for.”
            Maddie said goodbye and Suzanne held the blank phone in her hand a moment, glad the pantry door was closed. Maybe she could stall off her mother’s persistent nagging a little longer. Or at least formulate a coherent response.
            She only wants to see you happy. By her definition, that is. A happily married woman, at home, caring for her man.
            Suzanne shuddered. No, thank you. She enjoyed her independence and intended to keep it.
            The door opened suddenly, startling her. She nearly dropped the phone as she took a step back, ramming her shoulder into a thick shelf of canned goods. “Ouch!”
            Nick studied her curiously. His broad shoulders blocked the kitchen from her view. “What are you doing in here? Did your mom put you in time-out or something?”

There’s been much talk on the writer loops about using photos on blogs and trailers. I have two book trailers–although I’m having issues re-uploading my trailer for Out of the Darkness–you can see the trailer I created for Slightly Tarnished at http://www.lillygayle.com/.

The photographs for both trailers came from multiple locations.  For my Out of the Darkness photo (hopefully to be re-posted to my website soon!) my brother used my personal photographs and some he had and he drew in the characters so they’re kind of like avatars. Very cool. But I made the trailer for Slightly Tarnished. Luckily, I had my brother to give me advice.

For Slightly Tarnished, I used many of my own photographs or ones my daughter sent to me from Europe.Some of the London photographs I found in the public domain. I often find the most mundane of facts fascinating, and it often inspires my imagination. Others read some obscure fact or witness a seemingly normal occurrence and are inspired to invent.

Karl Friedrich Benz of Germany invented the first gas-powered automobile powered by an internal combustion engine. But it was America’s own Henry Ford who made the automobile affordable by utilizing assembly lines in his factories.

The idea of utilizing a production assembly line came to Mr. Ford after he saw a dis-assembly line the Armour and Swift meat packing plants used to process meat.

And nature inspired Swiss inventor George de Mestral to create Velcro. When he and his dog returned from a walk in the woods, they were both covered in burs. He looked at the burs under a microscope and got the idea for a new type of fastener. He named his invention Velcro from the words velour and crochet.

 And Martin Cooper became inspired to invent the cell phone from watching Captain Kirk speak into his communicator. Much of the futuristic technology in the science fiction series Star Trek is based on real science.


Makes me wonder if teleportation might one day be possible. It’s not something I’d want to try. I saw the movie, The Fly!

But fiction and fantasy are often based on real science. Or inspire real science. In Robert Heinlein’s Glory Road, he has a character reading from an electronic tablet in his future world as books are no longer made from bound pages. Since Glory Road was first published in 1963, it makes me wonder if the inventor of e-readers might not have been a science fiction fan.

I’m more of a romance fan but I also enjoy science fiction and the paranormal, especially when there are romantic elements. My favorite paranormal/horror writer is Dean Koontz. I enjoy Stephen King’s work, but Mr. Koontz has a unique way of combining science fiction, horror, and/or the paranormal with a dash of romance. In Dark Rivers of the Heart, Mr. Koontz combines suspense and science fiction with romance in a tale of a man, a woman and a dog on the run from a high-tech rogue government agency.

I like the concept of rogue government agencies. The idea stayed with me after reading this book and played a big part in my own paranormal romance. Later, I read Fear Nothing, the first book in Dean Koontz’ Moonlight Bay trilogy. The main character, Chris Snow, has XP–exeroderma pigmentosum. I was fascinated by the idea of a “real” disease that prevented the sufferer from venturing out in daylight without risking severe burns and skin cancers. I read all three books in the series and began researching the disease while contemplating ideas for a vampire book. Around the same time, I saw a re-run of the old Jean-Claude Van Dam movie, Universal Soldier. And by 2005, I had completed my first draft of Out of the Darkness.

Books, movies, life, and the most mundane of events can trigger the imagination. And inspiration can come from any direction. As a writer, I’m always reading or listening, hoping to get an idea for that next book. And when I’m reading, I often wonder what inspired the writer.

So, if you’re a writer, what inspired your latest release? And if you’re a reader, what inspires your decision to choose a paranormal over a historical? Or suspense over horror?

I’ve always loved trivia and researching useless and little known facts. I often spend days searching the itnernet for that one tidbit of information that grabs my interest and gives me the next story idea. The only bad thing is that I sometimes forget to write and spend hours on the computer researching.

Searching the internet for historical information on England is how I came up with the idea for my soon-to-be released historical, Slightly Tarnished. While scrolling through articles on London, I came across information on a period of time in London known as “The Great Stink.”http://www.martinfrost.ws/htmlfiles/great_stink.html

Just the title of the article intrigued me. And in 1997, I spent weeks researching and plotting a rough draft.

Before  “The Great Stink,” sewage emptied into cesspits under homes or poured directly into open drainage ditches. Run-off washed into the Thames and cesspits backed up into houses.  Sir Marc Isambard Brunel came up with the idea of tunneling beneath the Thames. 

He submitted a plan to drain London’s sewer to the lower side of the river by building a tunnel under the Thames. Work began on the original tunnel in 1825 but after several accidents and severe flooding, the tunnel was sealed in 1828.

In 1834 Parliment loaned The Thames Tunnel Company the funds to complete the project and Brunel’s son Isambard Kingdom Brunel acted as chief engineer. The senior Brunel redesigned a tunnel shielding to prevent flooding and work on the tunnel began again in 1840. It was completed in 1841 and in March of that year, Queen Victoria knighted Sir Brunel.The tunnel officially opened in 1843 but the stinch continued to plague London.

After completion of the tunnel, the Metropolitan Commission of Sewers ordered all cesspits closed. House drains were then connectted to the sewer system and drained directly into the Thames. As a result, there was a cholera epidemic in 1848-1849 and by 1858 the stinch from the river became unbearable.

“The Great Stink” created new interest in Sir Brunel’s sewer tunnel. Many cried, “Dilution is the solution to polution!” But adding more water to the tunnel systems didn’t stop the stink. It reached its peak the summer of 1858 when thousands were forced to flee the city. But Parliament remained in session, trying to find a soultion to the problem.

Government officials and citizens who either refused to leave the city or had no country estate to go to, draped their windows with curtains soaked in chloride of lime to keep out the odors and “dangerous miasmas.”

A new sewer design was needed and civil engineer Joseph Bazlgette was put in charge of the project. By combining the old with the new, he helped create a separate system for human waste and storm drains.

The Queen was so pleased with the results of the larger tunnel system, she ordered engineers to construct a rail system inside the tunnels. The sewer tunnel was quickly transformed into a promenade and tourist attraction. The tunnel still exists today and is part of London’s famous underground.

Today I’m continuing my All About the Pink blog tour. So, let’s welcome author, Jennifer Johnson.  

Lilly-Welcome Jennifer! But before we get into a discussion on something as serious as breast cancer, why don’t you tell us a bit about your latest release, Rescue Me.

Jennifer-Before I talk about Rescue Me, I want to let your readers know I have two published novels with The Wild Rose Press, The Jinx and The Clergy Affair.  Both are comedic romances.

Lilly- I love romantic comedies! They make for great movies. So, tell us something about The Jinx. Got a blurb and a buy link?

Talk about a house call! “It doesn’t have to be like this, you know,” Riley said in a casual manner as he turned the key in the lock.
“Like what?”
He turned his attention from the lock to her. “You biting my head off every time you get within snapping distance.”
“Look. I know what this is all about. My dad wants to fix us up. If you hadn’t noticed, he invents reasons for you to come over. Toby and I do fine. I’m going to pay off my credit cards, go back to school, and make a life for myself and my son. I’m not interested in a relationship.”
“Okay.” The door swung open, and Riley motioned for her to go in.

Riley bit his lip, mirth on his face and a dimple in his cheek.
“Or anybody. I don’t have any sex drive. I haven’t for a long time since Toby was a baby, so it’s nothing personal, and it’s not funny.” She shut her stupid mouth wishing she could take back every single embarrassing word. She closed her eyes so she wouldn’t have to be humiliated further by seeing Riley laugh at her. A moment later when she opened her eyes ready to glare at him, her heart skipped a beat at the hungry expression on Riley’s face.
And not for food.
For her.
It was the look of the lion as he caught sight of the gazelle. Fear fluttered in her stomach, and something else, too. A long forgotten urge budded and opened. The air crackled between them. Amy reached her hands up to feel the heat of her face and recognized the urge.
Lust. Desire.
Oh, no.
Time for the gazelle to run.
Riley’s eyes narrowed as if he knew she was about to flee. He took the two steps which separated them, put his arms around her, lowered his head, and touched his lips to hers.
Zing. Zing. Zing. Nerve endings throughout Amy’s body fired rapidly, deliciously. Riley’s mouth moved over hers, and Amy greedily returned the kiss, testing, tasting, awakening. She groped his back, feeling the firm flesh she had spied from her bedroom window. Riley’s masculine scent surrounded her. His large frame engulfed her, giving her a sense of power and yet, his touch was careful, cherishing.
With his hands on her upper arms, Riley gently pushed her away. Through passion-hazed eyes, Amy blinked at him.
Huh?
Riley dropped his hands leaving Amy’s heated skin bereft. She took a shuttering breath.
Riley shook his head as he studied her. “No. It’s not funny, but it’s also not true.”
He strode toward the firehouse, and Amy watched him leave noticing his rumpled and untucked shirt.   
Her hands had bunched up the material and kneaded the bare skin of his back. She was the culprit. Oh, boy, was she ever.

As you know, October is breast cancer awareness month and this month is all about the pink.  So, I’m giving you the floor, so to speak. I want to hear your breast cancer story. I understand you didn’t personally suffer from the disease, but someone close to you did. And as anyone who’s been touched by this horrible disease knows, it doesn’t just affect the patient, it affects everyone close to the patient. So, tell us your story.

Jennifer-About seven years ago a close friend of mine found a lump in her breast. She received radiation, and was declared in remission. Five years later she went for a mammogram and cancer was found in the other breast. The doctor did a lumpectomy. We were thankful that this was all that was needed, but about a week later they called her back and told her she would have to have the breast removed because the cancer was more widespread than they thought. I advised her to ask about having a double mastectomy since she had already had cancer in the first breast, but the doctor told her it “wasn’t necessary”. In talking with this doctor, he also told her reconstructive surgery wasn’t an option for her because of her age. She is in her late sixties. I thought this was outrageous. If she wanted reconstructive surgery, I don’t care if she was a hundred and sixty seven, he should have explored that option with her.  But she isn’t assertive like I am. She just accepted what he said without pushing him for other options. Unfortunately, my friend doesn’t live very close to me so I couldn’t go to the doctor with her and pound his head or ask the hard questions she wasn’t comfortable asking.

After the mastectomy, it was very hard for her to accept this new image of who she was, but I kept telling her how beautiful she was because that missing breast meant that she was still here for me to love her. When she showed me the scar, I was honored, because I know at that time she felt vulnerable and ugly. But that scar was the most beautiful pink line I’d ever seen because it meant she was still alive. Since she did not have reconstructive surgery, we celebrated her prosthetic bra and the fake boob in it. And thank the Lord for how realistic it feels. That’s right, I felt her fake boob.

I still get angry when I think that the doctor dismissed her wishes about what would be the very best for her. Even if taking the other breast wasn’t necessary, if it helped her sleep better at night because she wouldn’t worry about it coming back a third time, then it would be necessary. You know? I’m not sure what I could have done differently with my friend as I tried to encourage her the very best I could. My hope in telling this story is to implore every woman to be assertive with your doctor, ask questions, and know it is within your rights to ask for a second opinion. This is the only body we have, so, by God, we better fight for it. And if some doctor disagrees, well, I sure as heck am going to wipe the dust off my boots from that doctor’s office, and never go back. I will find a doctor who will work with me and respect my thoughts about my body.

So, that’s my story, Lilly. And I thank you for giving me the opportunity to tell it here.

Lilly- Your friend is lucky to have you. I can’t tell you how much that type of moral support helps when  you’ve just been told you have breast cancer. As a breast cancer survivor and a mammographer, it angers me to hear a doctor–any doctor–tell a woman she is too old for reconstructive surgery.

Unless a women was in poor health before the cancer diagnosis or there are contraindications such as an underlying heart or lung condition that would preclude a non-lifesaving surgery, then there is no such thing as “too old.”

I’ll bet if that same doctor underwent a penectomy for carcinoma of the penis, he’d want an implant, regardless of his age! And yes, penis cancer is very real and a penectomy is the term for a penis amputation.

It’s not about vanity. It’s about healing and feeling whole and well again.

While prosthetic breasts are fine for some women, others feel disfigured without reconstructive surgery. And women have so many choices today from saline and silicon implants to TRAM flap surgeries that use tissue from the stomach to create a new breast. They can also use tissue from the back if the patient has had prior abdominal surgeries.

After a mastectomy, women deserve the right to chose whether or not to undergo another surgery, regardless of the doctor’s notion of how old is too old for breasts.

As for your friend wanting a bilateral mastectomy, I can’t blame her. Not as a mammographer or a breast cancer survivor. Women with perfectly healthy breast but who carry the BRCA gene (the hereditary breast cancer gene) often opt for prophylactic mastectomies to avoid developing breast cancer in the future.

So, if your friend wanted a bilateral mastectomy after she’d already had cancer in both breasts, then her doctor should have taken her concerns seriously and discussed her options.


One thing women of all ages need to remember: If you are not comfortable with your doctor’s recommendations or don’t feel as if he/she is taking your concerns seriously, seek a second opinion. It is your breast. Your right. Your health. And your life. And we all want to be survivors.
