The snippet below is from my paranormal romance, Embrace the Darkness, the second book in my Darkness Series.

Embrace the Darkness, my paranormal romantic suspense and the sequel to Out of the Darkness is now available exclusively on Amazon until June 21, when the book will officially be released in both print and digital formats to ALL on-line retailers, including Barnes & Noble and my publisher, The Wild Rose Press.
In the meantime, I hope to offer excerpts from the book to entice readers into ordering it. Each of these excerpts (see previous two posts) include lines I borrowed from people I know in real life.

Today’s “quote from real people” comes from friend, co-worker, and summertime beach buddy, Jennifer. Jennifer’s “catch phrase” is the bold print in the excerpt below.

Set up: The heroine is ex-soldier turned detective Amber Buckley. She and her partner are investigating the Lifeblood of America murders. Two employees of the blood and tissue bank turned research facility were brutally murdered and another employee is missing. During the course of the investigation, Amber meets Gerard Delaroche, assistant CEO of the company–a vampire posing as a mortal with a light sensitivity disorder so he can more easily pass as human.

In this excerpt, Amber has already learned Gerard’s dark secret and she’s soon going to discover some hidden secrets in her own past when she meets a vampire, Nicolas, who’s either protecting her or stalking her. But which is it?

Excerpt:

Her pulse quickened. “That’s how Timmons found
out. Isn’t it?”

“He wasn’t a colonel then,” Nicolas said, “but it
was the beginning of his obsession with vampires.”

Gerard had been kidnapped because of her mother.
She’d started this chain of events when she ignited

Sequel Secrets

When I first began writing the sequel to Out of the Darkness, I thought it would be easy. I already had my hero and heroine. Gerard and Tina were great secondary characters in the first book. They even had a budding romance. What could be better? It took about ten chapters for me to realize their story wasn’t going to work. Tina had a daughter. And Gerard was a vampire.

Why did that bother me so much? Because as the mother of two daughters, I realized a good mother would never put romance ahead of her children. No matter how much Tina was attracted to Gerard, he was a vampire living in a dangerous world between worlds. Would a good mother risk falling in love with a man who’s very existence could put her child at risk? Maybe. But would readers respect or even like a woman who did that? I had a hard time respecting her as I wrote their story. In my opinion, if Tina really cared more for her daughter than herself (which is how I feel about my own children) I figured she’d avoid getting involved with Gerard and she’d be upfront with her reasons. And if Gerard was as honorable as I wanted him to be, he’d respect that. So, I had to find another love interest for Gerard. And that’s when I came up with what I hope is a gripping opening to the sequel, Embrace the Darkness.

The prologue practically wrote itself. I was on fire. I thought I could just keep typing away until the book was finished. But as soon as I sent a rough draft of the first few chapters to my critique partners, authors Andris Bear and Amy Corwin, I realized writing a sequel wasn’t just a matter of picking up where the first story left off. As Amy pointed out, Embrace the Darkness wasn’t Vincent and Megan’s story. It was Gerard and Amber’s story and Vincent and Megan had to take a back seat. And Andris informed me that although I needed to give readers enough information from the first book so the second book would make sense, I couldn’t just dump it all in the first few chapters because it would still be backstory dump, which is a big no-no. So, I had to filter in the elements of the first book that would be crucial in the second book the same way I’d filtered backstory into the first book–a little at a time.

Easier said than done!

A lot happened in the first book. There were good vampires, villains, military operatives, a questionably bad vampire, a potential cure…How did I filter the information in without backstory dump? I figured I had to tell the first of the story from Amber’s point of view. Amber is a new character. She knew nothing about vampires. So after the prologue, I began writing book two in her POV, and things seemed to click…for awhile. Then my characters took over and changed my plot, which left a lot of holes that needed to be filled.

To fill those plot holes, I had to do more research. And I found the answers I was seeking by researching some little known vampire myths. I finally finished the book in July and submitted it in August. And now I’m happy to report, Embrace the Darkness will be released on June 21, 2013.

The Long Night Moon

Humans have been naming the phases of the moon since there were people. Even before the Native Americans assigned names and meanings to the full moons, the Celtics did it as did the ancient Chinese.
The last full moon of 2012 began last night (Thursday 12/27/12) and peaked at 5:21 am this morning, but it will still be visible tonight. Last night and again tonight, the full moon will follow the sun’s path, rising around sunset and setting around sunrise on Saturday. Around midnight, the moon will be in a similar position as the sun during the summer solstice.

In areas where the sky is clear, the moon will be visible from dusk until dawn all over the world. It will be a full moon on a long night in the Northern Hemisphere and will ride low in the sky like the sun in winter in the Southern Hemisphere. North and South of the Arctic Circle where the sun stays below the horizon or there is no sun at all, the moon will mimic the position of the summer sun, hovering just above or below the horizon.

NThe December full moon shines in the center of a star formation known as the Winter Circle, a promise of where the sun will reside six months from now—a promise of longer days and warmer temperatures—a moon for wishes and dreams.

Each year, the Winter Circle is visible around the time of the Winter solstice. But this year, Jupiter is also visible near the star circle. It should be visible near the lower left of the full moon. It will be brighter than Sirius, the brightest star of the nighttime sky.

Throughout the Northern Hemisphere, this is the closest full moon to the December solstice, the longest night of the year. The Native Americans who lived in the United States named the recurring full moons to keep track of the seasons. Colonial Americans called December’s full moon The Christmas Moon while others followed Native American customs, calling it the Full Cold Moon or more commonly, the Long Night Moon.

The Long Night Moon was so named because it falls soon after the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year. It was a great night to attack the enemy. And if you believe in the supernatural, a great night for werewolves, shape shifters, and vampires.

The Long Night Moon shines longer than any other full Moon of the year, brightening the sky as clearly as the sun for those with supernatural vision. And the further north one lives in the Northern Hemisphere, the more dramatic the moon will be. In some areas, there will be three hours and 45 minutes more moonlight than sunlight. So beware! It will be a perfect evening for creatures of the night.

Day One. Destination: Germany

My husband and I recently vacationed in Germany with a side trip to Amsterdam. We went to visit my daughter and her husband who’s stationed in Germany. We left on a Tuesday afternoon, flying Jet Blue out of RDU to JFK.

Flying over New York was not what I expected. For one thing, I thought to see tall buildings and crowded streets. I didn’t expect to see oceanfront property. Yes, I know New York is a coastal state and that Long Island and Manhattan are, well, islands. But the expanse of sand took me by surprise. So did the empty beaches. It was 80 degrees when we flew over. NC beaches are packed when the temps reach that high. But I could barely see anyone on these beaches. And the sand looked almost concrete. Is it paved like a sidewalk? I don’t know. But the view from the air was incredible.

Once we reached JFK, we rushed to our next gate to wait for our connecting flight on Swiss Air that would takes us to Zurich where we’d change planes again. Our experiences on both Jet Blue and Swiss air were great. Planes left on time. The flight attendants were friendly. And the view of New York at night was awe inspiring.

It was an overnight flight and I awoke in time to see Paris. Or not. The plane had dropped below its 37,000 feet cruising altitude but we were still too high to see much of anything. And it was cloudy. But I got a glimpse of the Swiss Alps as we entered Switzerland. Seeing the tops of those jagged, snow-capped mountains jutting high above the clouds was a sight I’ll never forget. It reminded me of that movie, Alive. Alive is based on the book Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors and details the events surrounding the Uruaguay rugby team whose plane crashed in the Andes mountains in 1972. A fellow writer posted this blog after hearing one of the survivors of the crash speak at a lecture. http://tonianderson.blogspot.com/2011/03/complaining-is-optional.html It will give you cold chills and make you think.

From Zurich, we caught a connecting flight to Nuremberg where my daughter picked us up. I’m in the process of writing the sequel to Out of the Darkness, my paranormal vampire romance. There’s a scene in the book set in a cemetary in Nuremberg. And so, my daughter took us to the cemetary so I could take some pictures. She thought it was creepy, but I love old cemetaries.

I find them incredibly peaceful and beautiful, not like modern cemetaries with the plastic grave markers or flat foot markers. I love the artistry of old grave yards. And there are always beautfiul statues.

And in Germany, there are many gorgeous old churches, some that date back to mideival times.

This particular cemetary had some new graves and some from WWII and older. My daughter said some victims of the plague were buried in mass graves on the church grounds. We did see some family graves and I wasn’t sure if they were headstones to mark the family plot, or if they were indeed, mass family graves.

This grave, for instance, had no other markers near it. And nothing that looked like additional plots. So, I can only guess about the Sebald family and how/when they died and were buried.

Visiting cemetaries may seem a bit macabre, but luckily for me, my husband enjoyes it too. He says walking through cemetaries makes him feel grateful he isn’t sprawled out in the dirt getting eaten by worms. Then, I remind him he wants to be cremated.

After spending a relaxing afternoon touring the cemetary, we walked through Nuremberg and discussed plans for our week long visit with my daughter and her husband. Nuremberg is a beautiful old city, but I think I like Beyreuth better.

All this month has been about breast cancer awareness. But today, in celebration of Halloween, I’d like to make readers aware of my friend and critique partner’s upcoming new release, Vampire Protector.

Amy Corwin is the author of multiple Regency romances, cozy mysteries, a family cookbook, and now, a super awesome paranormal romance with a twist you won’t believe. I don’t want to give the book away, but there is one part of the book that gives an explanation for a historical event that is truly imaginative. When I read it, I thought to myself, “Wow! If vampires really existed, this would be terrifying and make perfect sense.”

Luckily, vampires are creatures of legends, horror films, Halloween, and some really great paranormal romances. So, without further ado, I give you my friend and critique partner, Amy Corwin.

Wow! That blurb gives me goosebumps. Just the thing for Halloween!

I read the original versions of this story–way back when it was still in the writing and editing phase, and as Amy’s critique partner, I can tell you this is a great book. I’ve already mentioned one of my favorite parts. The big moment when that historical incident is explained. Without spoiling the story, Amy, what is one of your favorite moments in the book?

Amy-

Chortle, chortle. Probably that same moment. Is that mysterious enough to drive our readers crazy, or what?

But seriously, I do have other, quieter moments that I adore. Moments such as those when Gwen visits her abandoned, childhood home and remembers her mother cooking in the kitchen. She even seems to smell the delicious aroma of a peach pie wafting through the dusty dining room and hears one of her mother’s LP records playing on the old console stereo…

And while this may seem odd, part of the reason I wrote this book was to help me deal with the death of my parents. Like Gwen, I wanted to relive those days of my childhood in the early sixties when there was always something freshly baked and sitting on the counter in the kitchen when my sister and I got home from school. I miss the way people always “dressed up” and wore dresses, stockings, and hats even to just go shopping! So a great deal of this book deals with memories, nostalgia, family, and overcoming grief in order to find happiness in the present—and future.

Family is everything. I’m lucky to still have my parents and I love them dearly. And I do remember a sort of nostalgia to the story. I liked it. Then again, I liked everything about this book and cannot wait to read the finished product. There’s just something about the professional, editorial process that makes a good book sparkle and shine! And The Wild Rose Press has some awesome editors. But you have other publishers and books don’t you? Want to mention just a couple of your favorites?

In addition to my new contemporary paranormal, I have started a series of historical romantic mysteries set in the early years of the 19^th century—the Regency period, to be exact. They feature various hapless and often rascally members of the Archer family. I have two out with The Wild Rose Press and a third coming out from Highland Press in November.

I’ve read earlier versions of I Bid One American and The Bricklayer’s Helper and loved them both. Now I have to get off my tush and order the published versions!

Okay, now that you’re published in both paranormal and Regency, can you choose a favorite genre between the two? Or are you like me and love variety in your reading and writing?

Amy-

It’s really impossible to choose between the two—I love history and the paranormal. Maybe that’s why even my paranormals have some historical elements. I think a lot of my interest in both was generated by reading old Gothics like those written by Virginia Coffman, Victoria Holt, and Barbara Michaels. I always wanted to “mash” the historicals together with Barbara Michaels to get a combination of spooky ghosts in the historical settings.

Lilly-
We’re a lot a like in our reading and writing tastes. Although I’m only published in the paranormal genre, I have several historicals I’m hoping to publish in the near future. The main difference is that mine are set in Victorian England and the Industrial/Gilded Age (also known as Post Civil War) era America. So, what’s next for you Amy. Any new books you’re working on or have high hopes for publication?

Amy-

Gosh—I really don’t want to jinx myself, but I have a contemporary mystery, Whacked!, under consideration at the moment. I received an update today indicating that it’s gone to the acquisitions committee, but I’m trying not to get my hopes up too high! As the saying goes, there’s many a slip ’twixt cup and lip. This story is a very light-hearted, cozy mystery set on the shores of North Carolina. It’s the first in what I hope will be a series of mysteries set in that area. But…enough about that…as I said, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Lilly-
And to wrap things up, care to share a particularly scary Halloween story with us? Or maybe just an amusing one.

Amy-

Oh, dear. Scary. We’re just about the most mundane folks anyone would want to meet. That’s why I bought that skeleton for Halloween and hung it up on the tree under the “Beware of Dog” sign. That’s about as scary as it gets around here.

Well, wait, there was that nightlight thing. We had this nightlight with the motion detector that kept going on in the hallway, even though there was no one there to set it off. Even the cats—both of them—were draped over our feet every time it went off. The cats vehemently deny all responsibility. But for several nights running, it flickered on. And then off. And then on. It drove us crazy. If the cats hadn’t awakened us by attacking our feet under the covers several of the times this occurred, we might not have even noticed it.

So I moved the light to my bathroom. Now it behaves beautifully and only goes on when I stumble into the bathroom in the middle of the night to…well, you know. I’m getting older. These things happen when you age. You adjust.

What’s with the hall? No clue. You decide.

Let’s just blame the cats. I always blame the cat in my house. The dog is never the culprit. lol!

October isn’t just the month associated with fall and Halloween. It’s breast cancer awareness month and I’m going Pink all this month. Why? Because not only am I a writer and a mammographer, I’m also a breast cancer survivor. And this is my journey.

In June 2007 I went to the doctor to refill my migraine medicine. It had been 18 months since my last mammogram so the doctor wrote an order for me to have another one. I had no lump. No symptoms. And no family history. I did not meet any of the criteria for high risk.

What are the risk factors?
Being female
A first degree relative diagnosed with breast cancer: (mother, sister, daughter, maternal grandmother, maternal aunts)
Early menarche–younger than 12
Older age at menopause–over 55
Years of artificial hormones after a hysterectomy
Nulliparity (Never having children)
Not breast feeding
Late first time pregnancy

I felt confident this mammogram would be negative too. I was 47 years old and like I said, I had not felt any lumps and I do monthly self-breast exams. Even my clinical breast exam was normal.

I didn’t expect any surprises. So at the end of the day on June 14, 2007, after I’d done my last mammogram patient, I became the patient and one of the other mammogram technologists (Linda) did my mammogram.

In 2007 we still had film screen rather than the digital mammograms we have now, so we had to wait for the films to drop out of the processor. And the moment the films dropped, I knew. I had breast cancer. It wouldn’t be officially diagnosed until after a biopsy, but I knew the moment I saw the spiculated lesion next to my chest wall. I’d seen enough lesions in patients diagnosed with breast cancer to know I wasn’t going to be lucky.

Linda and I immediately took the films back to the radiologist’s office. But it was Friday June 14th, 2007. The Friday before Father’s Day. The radiologist had already left for the day to start his week-long vacation. So, I had to wait until Monday. But despite suspecting the worst, I kept my suspicions to myself. I didn’t even tell my husband. We even hosted a Father’s Day gathering out by the pool that Sunday. I remained up-beat, but that one centimeter lesion on my mammogram loomed in the back of my mind.

On Monday, another radiologist read my films and ordered a diagnostic mammogram. Of course, by this point, I’d told my family there was something on the original mammogram and I needed additional images. I was still optimistic when talking to them, but I knew. I had the diagnostic mammogram on June 21, 2007.

The difference in a screening mammogram and a diagnostic mammogram is the number of images taken, the type of images taken, and the doctor looks at your films while you’re still in the department.

And when the original area seen on my mammogram was magnified, it looked even more ominous.So, I had an breast ultrasound and it didn’t look much better.

So, the radiologist ordered a biopsy. And because I work at the hospital and was willing to have the procedure done there, our surgeon worked me in as quickly as possible. I had a breast needle localization biopsy on June 28th, 2007. And the lesion looked bad on the specimen image too.

But I wouldn’t know anything definitive until the biopsy results came back from the pathologist. So, despite a gut-deep feeling that it was cancer, I remained positive. We even planned a long weekend trip to Emerald Isle for the July 4th weekend. My daughter and her boyfriend left to join his family on July 1st. And I was going down on July 3rd after work. That just happened to be the same day I got my diagnosis. I had breast cancer.

Not just cancer, but an invasive carcinoma with DCIS. DCIS is ductal carcinoma instu–which is a tiny, early cancer contained inside the duct that hasn’t spread to the surrounding breast tissue. But I had DCIS and an invasive carcinoma which meant one of those tiny DCIS cancers had spread and bloomed into a cancerous tumor. One that was still too small to feel but it was deep in the breast next to my chest wall. And as it turned out, it was a very aggressive tumor.

But I went to the beach and my husband joined me on the 4th. I told my daughter before he got there. She already suspected the worst by this point. At first, she refused to discuss it. She’d just turned 18 on July 1st so I’d kind of put a damper on what should have been a happy occasion for her. She’d just graduated from high school and was about to start college and..her mother had breast cancer. My older daughter is married and lives in Germany with her military husband. I’d already called her and given her the news. I’d never been more proud of her. She put on a brave front and promised not to cry until she got off the phone. God bless her. I couldn’t have handled it if she’d fallen apart thousands of miles away.

And my dear, darling husband was a rock. He stood by my side and tried so hard not to show fear. Before I got the official diagnosis, I made a pact with my husband and youngest daughter. No two people could show fear or get upset at the same time. If one cried the other two had to stay strong. Stay positive.We had to keep the faith. And we stuck to that agreement throughout my ordeal.

But my ordeal didn’t begin until we came home from celebrating July 4th at the beach.

When I followed up with my medical oncologist, I learned I’d have to have chemotherapy. I was shocked. I thought since the cancer was so small and had been caught early, I’d get by with just a lumpectomy and radiation.

A lumpectomy is where the surgeon goes in after the initial biopsy and cancer diagnoses to remove more tissue to make sure they got all the cancer cells. I knew I needed another surgery, but chemo?

I was devastated. But I had an aggressive cancer and I was under 50, so chemo was the best way to fight the disease and ensure that it wouldn’t come back. But all I could think of was throwing up and going bald. So, I broke down. But then I pulled myself together. I had eight weeks of chemotherapy ahead of me and I needed to be strong. And a MUGA scan (a nuclear medicine test of the heart) showed that my heart was strong enough to endure chemotherapy.

The good news was that because my tumor was so aggressive, it would respond well to chemo and radiation. But it was close to my chest wall so I feared it had spread. It was also HER-2 negative and FSH negative.

HER-2 is a genetic factor which encourages cell growth. FSH is a follicle stimulating hormone that can also affect cancer cell growth. My tumor lacked these components but it was still a fast growing, aggressive tumor. But I was not a candidate for the cancer drugs Tomoxifin or Arimidex.

The good news for me is that breast cancer that is positive for HER-2 and FSH sometimes metastasize to the brain. The bad news is that breast cancers that do not have these hormone receptors often come back in the same breast or in the contralateral breast. But first, I had to get well before I could worry about a recurrence. And that meant another surgery.

On July 13–yes, Friday the 13th–but the 13th has always been a lucky day for me–I had a lumpectomy. I also had a lymphosintigraphy, which is a nuclear medicine/ surgical procedure to remove and evaluate lymph nodes to stage the cancer and see if it’s spread. A sentinel or main lymph node in a branch is injected with a radionuclide so the surgeon can trace the lymphatic branches from the main or sentinel node and remove them for biopsy. My surgeon removed the sentinel node and three other nodes. And they were all clear. No cancer in the nodes. It had not spread, thank God! Lucky #13!

I also had a port-a-cath implanted in my left chest wall that day. A port-a-cath is a small medical appliance inserted beneath the skin. A catheter connects the port to a vein and the port has a disc like section where drugs can be injected and blood drawn without having to find a vein each time. And since chemo can destroy the vein wall, its a good thing to have when undergoing chemotherapy. The port-a-cath is shown in the upper right side of the x-ray image (left side of the chest.)

The surgery wasn’t that bad, but it left some bruising and scarring. The small mark on my left shoulder is where the port-a-cath is. The bandage over my right breast covers the surgical scar.

The bruising and bandage under my right arm is where the lymph nodes were removed. And because the lymphatic system is a fluid system that drains throughout the body and I am missing four nodes on my right, I cannot have any blood drawn from or medications injected into my right arm or hand. And I cannot have an IV or my blood pressure taken on the right side for at least ten years. The reason behind this is to prevent lymphadenopathy, a condition in which fluid backs up in the lymph nodes and “drainage” system causing swelling in the limb. And I do not want a fat, swollen, right arm. So, no IV’s, blood pressures, or blood draws for me on this side.

The original scar from the original surgery wasn’t bad at all. But then I had the lumpectomy, and radiation which caused the tissue to retract. So, the scar I have today looks worse than the scar pictured on the left, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

When I had my second medical oncology visit I didn’t break down like I did the first time. I knew the chemo drugs were coming. That’s the visit where she told me that I’d be receiving two chemo drugs: Adriamycin and Cyclophosphamide every other week for eight weeks. And that I would lose my hair. ALL my hair. And so on July 20, 2007 I got a hair cut so it wouldn’t be as dramatic when I went bald. The picture on the right is of me with my haircut posing with two women who helped me get through the worst. I had my first round of chemo on August 1st. And started losing my hair on August 13th. Okay, maybe 13 isn’t such a lucky number sometimes.

But I was still working so it just didn’t seem sanitary to shed in a hospital. So, I got my husband to shave my head. I went wigless at home.

But I didn’t want to freak out my mammogram patients. So, I wore a wig to work. Who wants to have a screening test for cancer by a technologist who has cancer? And I didn’t want to have to answer questions about me when it should be about the patient when I’m doing a mammogram.

But my hair kept coming out even after I got my head shaved.

By Halloween, I was completely bald, my scalp as smooth as a baby’s bottom. The picture below is one of my favorites. I’m holding my nephew who had his little bald head covered by a cap. He was so adorable. I was adorable too. Because I was going to live!

I managed to get through chemo without missing too many days from work. I work four ten hour shifts so I was off on Friday’s anyway and was back at work by Monday. But after the last two treatments I had a problem called “Nadiring.” That’s when the white blood count drops dangerously low and you’re at your most vulnerable for infection. I also had severe diarrhea so I missed those last two Mondays during chemo.

Then I had a scare after chemo before starting radiation. Because my second surgery–the lumpectomy– showed some residual DCIS near the specimen margins, it was possible I’d still have to undergo a mastectomy. My margins were clean within one cm. The doctors like to see a two cm clean margin. So, I had to have an MRI to determined whether or not I’d have a mastectomy or radiation therapy. I had the MRI on October 3, 2007.

The MRI showed no cancer in either breast and so I was cleared to proceed with radiation treatments. I did not have a mastectomy.

I continued to work while having my radiation treatments but I got tired towards the end and felt as if it took all my energy just to put one foot in front of the other. But I completed my treatments just after Thanksgiving. And by Christmas, my hair started coming back. I stopped wearing a wig and was declared cancer free. And I had another surgery to remove the port. If if my cancer comes back, there will be no more chemo. Just a mastectomy and radiation.

But I still had to see both my radiation and medical oncologists on an alternating six week basis for another six months.

By Valentine’s Day, I had even more hair. And I’d graduated to oncology visits every three months.

I eventually ended up with a head full of thick, curling hair that I absolutely loved.

And I stopped seeing my radiation oncologist. But I was still seeing the medical oncologist every three months and having mammograms every six. And when I went for a follow up MRI in 2008, I had another scare. Something showed up in the opposite breast. My left breast. My healthy breast. So, I underwent a stereotactic biopsy under MRI. Much easier than the needle localization biopsy. I just laid on my stomach on the MRI table and the doctor used MRI guidance to see the area, insert a needle, and remove a tissue sample. I didn’t even miss a day of work afterward. And thank God, that biopsy was negative.

I lost my curls when I cut my hair the first time, but at least I have hair. It’s been over three years now since my diagnosis. I still see my medical oncologist every three to four months. I still get periodic lab work and until I had my last mammogram in August, I was getting mammograms every six months. But I’ve finally graduated to yearly mammograms and God willing, I will be getting negative reports from my mammograms for a long time to come.

My oldest daughter, Jennifer, still lives in Germany with her husband who is in army aviation. And my youngest daughter graduated from x-ray school and is now attending the UNC School of Medicine for Radiation Therapy.

Ironically, she has always wanted to be a radiation therapist. When she was in 6th grade, she donated over 7 inches of her hair to Locks for Love, an organization that uses real, donated hair to make wigs for children with cancer.

My husband is still loving and supportive and my marriage is stronger than ever. I’m much closer to my parents and brother, especially my mother. And in May of this year, I finally had my first book published. Out of the Darkness is a paranormal vampire romance published by The Wild Rose Press.

If you feel you fall into a high-risk category for breast cancer, please, follow up with your health care provider. And remember to follow the recommendations set forth by the American Cancer Society, the FDA, and the American College of Radiology when scheduling your mammograms.

The American Cancer society, FDA, and ACR recommends baseline screening mammograms for all women at age 35. With no family history of breast cancer, all women should start having yearly mammograms at age 40 or sooner with a strong family history.

If your mother was diagnosed with breast cancer before age 49, you should subtract 10 years from the age your mother was diagnosed and start having yearly screenings then. I was 47 when I was diagnosed, so my daughters should start having yearly screening mammograms at 37 rather than waiting until age 40.

Again, as with any medical advice you find on the internet, please verify with your health care professional. And take control of your own health care.

The Blog tour contest winner of the virtual gift of PDF books will be drawn on August 31. Everyone who posted a comment on any of the ten blog tour participant blogs is eligible to win. But I drew the name of my winner (from names of those who comment on my blog alone) this morning. The name I drew was none other than Rebecca Booth! She wins the $20 gift certificate to The Wild Rose Press. I know Rebecca’s a book reviewer, so I hope she’ll post a nice review for whichever book she buys from TWRP. Cha Cha’s at it again. As I was reading follow up comments to my previous blog, (see earlier post on Wild Kingdom) I heard Cha Cha scrambling in the kitchen. I left the computer to check on him and he was “guarding” the refrigerator. A moment later, Titi jumped off the futon and ran into the kitchen. I heard a squeak. Dreading what I would find, I ventured back into the kitchen and found this:

There’s a field behind my house and a pasture across the street. Prime hunting ground for a feline on the prowl.

Thank God, Titi is such a got mouser and now…a great rat killer!
