My fascination with the past and those who have gone before me is the ongoing inspiration behind my historical and light paranormal, time travel romances. I’ve done a great deal of research into family genealogy and come from well-documented English/Scots-Irish folk with a smidgen of French in the meld, a Norman knight who sailed with William the Conqueror. One family line goes directly back to Geoffrey Chaucer. And there’s a puritan line with involvement in the Salem Witch Trials—my apologies to Susannah Martin’s descendants–but that’s another story. In my recent light paranormal release, Somewhere the Bells Ring, I more deeply explored my Virginia roots.

Somewhere the Bells Ring is book three in my Somewhere’ series (not necessary to read these in order) with a Christmas theme. Set in the old family homeplace where my father was born and raised, a beautiful plantation home from the early 19th century, the story opens in 1968 during the tumultuous age of hippies, Vietnam, and some of the best darn rock music ever written. From that nostalgic year, the story flashes back to an earlier era, 1918 and the end of World War One. Having a Marine Corps Captain Grandfather who distinguished himself in France in the thick of the fighting during The Great War and then tragically died when my father was only three definitely influenced this story.

Leaving the door ajar, he stepped inside. “We missed you at breakfast.”

She answered distractedly. “I wasn’t hungry.”

He limped to where she stood, the hitch in his leg a little less pronounced today. Maybe he was getting stronger. “Why are you here, looking for ghosts?”

“Or a door to the past.”

He tried to coax a smile to her trembling lips. “Did you check inside the wardrobe?”

“Eric, I’m being serious.”

“That’s what worries me.” Leaning on his cane with one arm, he closed his other around her shoulders and drew her against him. Such a natural act, and she accepted his embrace without pulling back. She smelled of flowers from her perfume and wood smoke. “Mercy, child,” he said in his best imitation of Ella, “it’s as cold as a tomb in here.”

“It wasn’t last night.”~

Lazy Days

Today, I’m going to be lazy. Kind of like in that Bruno Mars song I like so much. Or, at least that’s what I’d like to be doing today. I’d like to lay in my bed and read. Or sit at my desk in my PJ’s and write. But, despite having the day off, I have a dozen or more things I need to accomplish.

My daughter and her husband have been gone for a week now. They headed back to Germany last Friday. It feels as if they’ve been gone a month. They were with his family the first week, split the difference the second week, and spent most of that third week with us. So, my husband and I took a week off to be with them. We didn’t really go anywhere. We had more of a stacation than a vacation, but we stuffed that week full of fun.

There was bowling, fishing, pool parties, shopping, and lots of dining out. People were in and out all week, mostly my daughter’s girl friends from “the old days” lol, and a cousin that’s always been like a daughter to me. It was a fun week. And now, I feel as if I’m a month behind on everything. Writing, cleaning, laundry.

My daughter did her own laundry while she was here. She even helped keep the towels washed. But, there were just so many towels. Especially beach towels from the pool parties. They take up a lot of room in the wash. And I’m still behind. But at least I got all the sheets washed and fresh ones put on the bed. Even mine.

Despite the fact that the house needs cleaning, today was supposed to be my Lazy Day. I was going to do a little laundry, a little reading and a lot of writing. But, now the air conditioner on my car is on the fritz. My youngest graduates from UNC’s Radiation Therapy program this weekend and we still don’t have new dresses to wear and I have a dozen errands to run.

So, I guess I’ll jut have to pop in a CD, find that Bruno Mars song, and turn the volume way up in the car while I’m driving around, running those errands, and wishing I could have my Lazy Day to do nothing but read and write.

FROM LOINCLOTH TO THONG . . . Not so different are they?
So are we moving forward or going back? Let’s take a quick look at the history of what men wear under there!

The first men’s underwear was probably the Loincloth, a simple strip of material or leather. A loincloth was also used to describe material pulled between the legs and fastened like a diaper. Not a good look for anyone 😦 Greek and Roman men reportedly wore loinclothes.

During the Middle Ages, loinclothes were replaced by loose trouser-like pants called Braies. Braies were a step-in design and laced at the waist and mid-calf. Wealthy men also wore chausses.- tights worn over the legs and feet.

By Renaissance, braies became shorter to accommodate longer styles of chausses — and chausses gave way to hose. The hose were two separate legs leaving their genitals uncovered. (Men could wear underdrawers) Hence, the Codpiece came into use. Over time, codpieces became padded to emphasize rather than to conceal, reaching their peak of size and decoration in the 1540s before falling out of use by the 1590s. (Since neither braies nor chausses were meant to be worn beneath they weren’t technically underwear.)

Braies were replaced by cotton, silk or linen drawers which were worn for years and years and years. And years. I couldn’t find much information on how much — if any — the basic design changed. However, in the mid 1800’s mass production of underwear began and people started to buy their drawers instead of making them at home. The Unionsuit also became popular in the mid 1800’s — 1868 actually — and had the drop seat in the back.

In 1874, the Jock Strap came along to provide support for the bicycle jockeys riding upon cobblestone streets.

The first underwear print ad ran in the Saturday Evening Post in 1911, an oil painting, not a picture. That would have been indecent! In WWI soldiers were issued button front shorts though they were often still worn with a union suit. (Which by the way became 2 pieces in 1910 – what we call long-johns).

By 1935 Coopers Inc. sold the world’s first men’s briefs, the design dubbed Jockey since it provided the support once only offered by a jock strap. 30,000 pairs of new Jockeys sold within the first 3 months of introduction. In the 1950’s manufacturers began to make men’s underwear from colored and/or printed material. In the 1970’s and 1980’s advertisers began appealing to the sexual side of selling, foregoing the long time ad practice of comfort and durability. Speaking of comfort – or lack thereof – the thong became popular in the 1990’s.

So, what do you prefer on your man? Boxer, brief, thong . . . loincloth?

Another Release Date!

I’m shocked and surprised. Slightly Tarnished was just released June 3, so I thought I’d have until at least December before I had to start promoting Wholesale Husband. But, for once, I’m glad I was wrong. The release date for Wholesale Husband is September 28th.

Well, if she wanted a dumb Irishman, he’d give her one.

“Aye, lassie. I’ll not be taking yer word for it and that’s fer sure.”

“Then you’ll come with us?”

There must be something seriously wrong with me. But he’d play along, just to see how far Miss Burdick would take this dangerous game she played.

“Aye,” he all but snarled. “I’ll go with you to the lawyer’s office, but I ain’t signing nothing until someone I trust has a look at those papers.”

Miss Burdick’s luminous smile shone like the sun bursting through the clouds on a stormy day. Devin’s heart dropped to his stomach. Fiona would smile like that if he had the money to send her to that fancy boarding school.

Damn if he wasn’t actually considering her proposal.

Today’s blogpost is going to be fun! Or maybe just a bit whacky. At any rate, I’ve joined a blog chain and each participant has agreed to let one of their characters inteview them. Yep, I’m going to be interviewed by an imaginary person. And she’s not even from this century! But here goes…

Nikki invited me to sit down. She was an American like me, and newly wed to a British Earl. The former Nicole Keller was now a countess, and rumor had it the marriage was one of convieneice. But she seemed happy.

I sat in a beautiful but uncomfortable rosewood and gold upholstered parlor chair. Nikki addjusted her wide skirts and sat across from me in a matching chair. She leaned forward, her curly brown hair falling over her shoulder as she met my gaze. “I heard you recently celebrated your annivesary. Which one?”

“Our thirty-first. We celebrated June 7.”

“May I offer my felicitations?” Her voice was unnaturally cultered, the slight inclination of her chin stilted, as if she wasn’t used to the regid posture or the formal speach.

I cracked a smile. “Thanks. And congratulations on your recent marriage.”

A smile brightened her face as well. “Thank you. Do you have any children?”

“I have two beautiful daughters. My youngest lives at home while attending her last year of college.” I didn’t say she was currently enrolled in UNC’s School of Radiation Therapy or that she worked part-time as a radiologic technologist. Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen wouldn’t even discover x-rays until November 1895.

“She’s attending college? Oh my! That’s so…adventurous.” Envy colored Nikki’s face. “I have no formal education beyond the school room. But I learned much, sailing on my father’s ship as a young girl. What of your oldest?”

“She’s married and living in Germany. Her husband is in the army, and she works for the army.” Again, I kept my secrets. My daughter worked for the MWR, the army’s version of parks and recreation. Her husband was an airtraffic controller. But in Nikki’s time, airplanes didn’t exist.

A frown wrinkled Nikki’s brow. “But America isn’t at war with Germany.”

Hmm. I hadn’t thought about that. I thought she’d have questions about my daughter’s job. There were only so many acceptable jobs a women could have in her time. I shrugged.

“It must be difficult,” she added after a moment of awkward silence. “My mother and I travelled together to England. In fact, she lives with Chad…I mean, Lord Gilchrest and me. But your daughter lives so far away, and overseas mail take so dreadfully long.”

But email and texting were instant. And there was always Skype and the telephone. Both my daughter and I had Vonage so there was no long distance charges. Besides, my husband and I had just visited my dauther and her husband in April. It was our second visit since her marriage in December 2006. And this time, we took a side trip to Amsterdam. But I didn’t say anything. I simply lowered my head to hide a smile.

Nikki cleared her throat. “Germany isn’t so very far from England. Perhaps you could sail there before heading home?” she suggested.

I hid another smile. “Perhaps.”

“I understand you’re from North Carolina.”

I nodded. “I live in north central North Carolina.”

Her golden brown eyes brightened. “Have you ever been to Portsmouth Village? I grew up there on the island.”

I hesitated, not sure how to answer. Nikki left the island in 1857. I was there in 2006. “Yes…”

Her face glowed with excitement. “It’s wonderful. Isn’t it? I love it here at Lands End, but I miss North Carolina and would love to show Lord Gilchrest where I grew up. It’s been over a year since I left. Has it changed much, do you think?”

What could I say? My husband and I visited Portsmouth Island when I was doing research so I could revise Slightly Tarnished, my historical romance about Nikki and her husband, Chad. But the Portsmouth Island I’d seen was nothing like the home she remembered.

Portsmouth Village was once the largest settlement on the Outer Banks and a major shipping center until the hurricane of 1846 cut a deeper inlet through Hatteras. After Ocracoke Inlet began to shoal, Portsmouth and nearby Shell Castle Island became lightering stations. During Nikki’s time, tall ships dropped anchor off shore and slave labor transferred the cargo to and from lighter, shallower draft boats for the journey out to sea or back to the wharf and further inland to other ports.

By 1860, the population of Portsmouth had grown to 685 residents. But after North Carolina succeeded from the union in 1861, many of those residents fled for the mainland to avoid the Union Army as it marched across the Outer Banks. Many never returned and eventually, the shipping industry shifted north and the village began to die.

Fishing replaced shipping for the islanders that remained and in 1894, the U.S. Life-Saving Service was established on the island. It played a vital role in the community for 50 years. But by 1956, only 17 residents remained on the island.

Eventually, the isolation became too much, and in 1971, the last two residents moved to the mainland.

The island is now a state park and visiting is like stepping back in time. Some of the houses remain and a church still stands as does the school and post office. But the mosqitos and flies will eat you alive. I wondered how people managed in Nikki’s time. But I couldn’t ask. She thought I was a woman from her own time who wrote sensation novels.

I cleared my throat. “It’s been a couple of years since I visited. I’m sure the place has changed.”

“Oh, I doubt it’s changed much,” she said with a laugh. “The people of Portsmouth Island live simple lives and don’t cotten to change.”

“I know you miss your home, but don’t you like it here–in Land’s End with your husband?” I know longer knew who was interviewing whom. I’d written Nikki’s story to have a happy ending, but things had happened. Terrible things. So, was she really happy? I needed to know.

She smiled as if hiding a great secret. “I hated London. But Gilchrest has it’s own private beach. And except for it being a castle, it reminds me of home. So yes. I’m happy. I love it here.”

I sighed with relief, knowing she was happy with her life and her husband because I’d written her that way.

Wild Kingdom

I don’t need to subscribe to the cable network, Animal Planet. I have my own little wild kingdom right here at home. But it hasn’t always been that way.

Over the years, we’ve had several cats and a couple of big, outdoor dogs. But big dogs smell if you don’t bathe them and they’re just too hard to bathe in winter. So, I’ve mostly been a cat person.

Our favorite and longest living cat was Daisy, a smart, lovable domestic long-hair. She shed and coughed up nasty hairballs, but she wasn’t a lot of trouble. My youngest daughter even taught her to do tricks. She would chase laser lights and flashlight beams and jump up to hang from my daughter’s arm. Then about six years ago, we adopted Titi.

Titi is a Malti-Poo. She was nine months old when we got her. Daisy didn’t like her much, but she tolerated her. Titi learned to sit, play dead, and shake “hands.” But mostly, she’s just a lapdog. She sits beside me for hours and follows me where ever I go. And she’s become my writing muse. When I write, Titi curls up on the futon in my office and waits patiently. She even helps me keep a writing schedule. At the same time every morning and every evening, Titi looks at me and goes into my office. If I don’t follow, she comes to check on me.

Titi and Daisy became pals until Daisy died of renal failure at thirteen. And I swore I’d never have another cat.

Titi was alone for awhile with just people companions. Then my oldest daughter left home to go to college. She moved into a house and adopted a three year old Lhasa Apso named Scooter. A year later, my daughter transferred to a university and couldn’t take Scooter so he stayed with us. We thought we’d have Scooter for awhile, but my daughter got married less than a year later and took Scooter with her to Alabama. But after her husband completed his basic training, the army sent him to Germany. And Scooter came to live with us a bit longer.

During that time, my youngest daughter got a kitten. And our house turned into wild kingdom.

Cha Cha is a short-haired black male. Titi and the cat bonded. Scooter was terrified of the kitten. For awhile, Cha Cha thought Titi was his mother. And let me tell you, it freaked my husband out to see a kitten trying to nurse a dog. Especially a dog that never had puppies.

Scooter eventually came to an understanding with Cha Cha and the two tolerated one another. Until Cha Cha started climbing into Scooter’s crate. For awhile there was a battle for dominance between Cha Cha and Scooter. I think Cha Cha won. And eventually, we put Scooter on a plane and sent him to my daughter in Germany.

And that’s when the fun really began.

My nephew had taught Cha Cha how to use the doggie door and he eventually grew big enough to jump the fence and venture out into the big bad world. At first, Cha Cha would bring in baby birds. We’d take them out of his mouth and set them free. Then he started bringing in dead mice and dead birds, leaving them as “gifts” on my daughter’s bedroom floor. When we didn’t appreciate his “gifts,” he brought us another live bird and this time, he turned it loose in the house.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to catch a wren that doesn’t want to be caught? I finally captured the little bird and tossed it out the front door.

Next, there was a live mouse. The cat dropped it in the kitchen while I was cooking and refused to catch it or kill it as it scurried under the dinging room table. I stood with spatula in hand, yelling at the cat to get the mouse. The cat laid in the floor an began casually licking his paws, looking at me as if I were a nuisance. Before I could grab a shoe and kill the thing myself, Titi ran under the table and killed it for me. And that’s when I learned my dog is a champion mouser. But Cha Cha is a mini panther and he likes to hunt.

I came home one day to find a dead blue jay in my dining room. Cha Cha faked innocence but I’d had enough. I wanted to get rid of the cat, but Lauren loves that evil beast my husband nicknamed Satan. And I love my daughter. So, Cha Cha stayed.

After the blue jay incident, Cha Cha brought in a baby rabbit and turned it loose in my office while I was trying to write. I had a time catching it. When I picked up the little fellow, his little back legs were just a pumping,his heart a pounding. Talking to him in soft tones, I carried him outside and set him free while my husband held the cat hostage in the house until the rabbit got away. Or so we thought…

The next day, Cha Cha brought me a rabbit’s foot–a bloody baby rabbit’s foot. He left the mutilated bunny carcass, in the yard.

We’re always finding dead, brids, mice, rats, moles, and voles in the yard. Cha Cha is quite the hunter. He once brought in a live squirrel and turned it loose in my bathroom.

I tried to catch the squirrel but it ran down the hall and into my daughter’s room. My husband came at it with a baseball bat, wanting to bash it’s little head in. I yelled at him and threw him out the room so I could catch the squirrel. Hubby yelled at me, telling me squirrels had sharp teeth and claws and would, “tear me up.”

But the squirrel just looked scared. He was sitting on my daughter’s pillow, his little chest heaving. The cat circled my feet, growling low and deep in his throat. I talked calmly to the squirrel, trying to gain its trust so I could pick him up. My husband raised the bat and told me to stay back.

“You can’t catch a squirrel,” he said. “It’s a wild animal.”

Naturally, I had to prove him wrong.

So, I picked up the baby squirrel, talking softly to it and stroking its tiny head. He curled sharp claws around my index finger and gave me a look of desperation. His claws tightened as if to say he’d fight to the finish if I harmed him, but the cat was growling and the Squirrel was terrified.

I carried the squirrel outside and placed him high up in a tree. He didn’t bite or scratch and looked down as if to say, “Thank-you,” before scampering off into the branches. My daughter said I was an idiot but started calling me the Squirrell whisperer. My husband asked me if I thought I was Ellie Mae.

I was feeling rather cocky about it so when the cat brought in a flying squirrel, I thought I could use my animal talents to rescue that little critter too. The cat cornered the squirrel in the bathroom, so I kicked the cat out and shut the door. I squatted on my haunches and spoke calmly to the critter. It sat huffing and puffing beside the toilet, eying me with suspicion.

I approached slowly, as I had with the tree squirrel, talking softly. Moving cautiously, I reached for the little fellow with my right hand and cupped his bottom with my left hand.

And that’s when he bit me.

He clamped down on my index finger and started gnawing me like an overcooked sirloin. I screamed and tried to pull him off but he dug down deeper. I tried shaking him off like a sticky booger, but he held on tight.

Finally, I lowered my hand to the floor until his feet touched the tile. And that’s when he finally let go…and flew over my shoulder, scaring ten years off my life!

Now I was trapped in the bathroom with a vicious attack squirrel no bigger than my palm, but that little sucker could fly! And he was between me and the door.

My first instinct was to grab something and kill it. But he looked so scared. And vulnerable. He sat beside the laundry hamper, chest heaving, eyes glued to me, his little body quivering. So, I picked up a hand towel and threw it over his head. Then I wrapped him up so he couldn’t bite me again. He squealed as I took him down the hall, the cat stalking me as if I’d rung the dinner bell. Then I opened the front door and tossed him out. I’ve never seen something so small move so fast! I had a time keeping the cat inside.

Now, some people would say, “Just close off the doggie door so the cat can’t get out.” In fact, I’ve been told that alot. But Titi loves the freedom the doggie door gives her so the doggie door stays. I’ve threatened to get rid of Cha Cha, but my daughter loves him. And as much as I claim to hate that cat, he kind of grows on you. But just when I thought Cha Cha and I had made our peace, he decided to get even with me for releasing the squirrels.

I came home from work one afternoon and rushed to the bathroom. It was a bit of an emergency so I didn’t take time to shut the door. Then Cha Cha walked in and dropped a full grown rat–not mouse–at my feet. I screamed and picked up my feet and the rat ran to the corner and looked at me with red beady eyes. I yelled at the cat to kill it, but he just sprawled out on the bathroom rug and started grooming himself. So, I screamed for Titi.

Titi came running but stopped at the doorway. The rat huddled in the corner. I sat on the john with my feet off the floor, yelling, “Get the rat, Titi! Kill it!”

Titi whimpered but didn’t enter. She started in and backed out. My bathroom is small and apparently, my dog is claustrophobic. So I was on my own.

The rat started looking around for an avenue of escape and I couldn’t just jump up and shut the door. Let’s just say it wasn’t possible for me to stand up and leave at the moment. So, I grabed the plunger sitting beside the toilet, thinking I could cover the rat long enough to finish my business and pull up my pants. But the rat was so big, it wouldn’t fit under the plunger. It’s head and tail stuck out. So, there I sat, pants around my ankles, holding a rat hostage under a toilet plunger.

Not my finest moment.

But the rat had to die. So I raised the plunger and started beating it to death. Not a noble or quick death, but I can assure you, at that particular moment, I didn’t care.

As soon as the rat stopped twitching, I pulled up my pants, washed my hands, and ran to the kitchen for the broom and dust pan. Once I tossed out the rat, I tossed out the cat. I closed off the doggie door and left the cat outside until the next day. But did Cha Cha learn his lesson? Oh no.

A couple of months went by without him bringing anything into the house. He was actually sort of sweet. But then he brought in a live bird with a long beak. He set it free in Lauren’s room. Now, she wasn’t happy.

I tried catching the bird with my hands the way I did the wren, but the bird tried to peck my eyes out! And it wouldn’t just fly out the window either. So, I got a broom and knocked the bird off the ceiling fan and into the trashcan. Then I threw a blanket over the trashcan and tossed the bird out the window. Lauren yelled at the cat and he immediately started snuggling her. And she forgave him. I still haven’t.

He’s been good lately. He hasn’t brought in any live animals, but he’s still hunting. He seems to think the foam noodles we use in the pool are prey. He attacks them, bites them, shreds them, and drags them in through the doggie door. We find them all over the house, along with a trail of pink, blue and purple chunks of foam.

But hey, it could be worse. He could be bringing snakes in. Right? Instead, he cornered a groundhog in my basement stairwell. I didn’t try to pick this critter up. I snapped his picture to prove what a menace the cat is and chased the ground hog up the steps with a broom.

Cha Cha stretched out on the kitchen counter, where he knows he isn’t supposed to be, and laughed at me.
